چکیده

-1. Tobacco hornworms, Manduca sexta, were reared on either tobacco leaves or synthetic diet. 2. Glucose and trehalose levels in the hemolymph were significantly lower in leaf-reared larvae. 3. Levels of trehalose were higher in the earlier part of each stadium. 4. Fourth stadium levels of trehalose were generally greater than fifth stadium levels. 5. Trehalose, but not glucose, levels were lower in diet-reared larvae parasitized by Apanteles congregatus than in unparasitized diet-reared larvae.

Host nutrition determines blood nutrient composition and mediates parasite developmental success: Manduca sexta L. parasitized by Cotesia congregata (Say).

This investigation examined the influence of dietary protein and carbohydrate balance in a chemically defined artificial diet for Manduca sexta larvae on development of the gregarious parasite Cotesia congregata. Normal unparasitized larvae and larvae superparasitized in the fourth stadium were reared to the end of the fifth stadium on six diets, each having the same total amount of casein and ...

Host plant urease in the hemolymph of the silkworm, Bombyx mori.

Urease activity was detected in the hemolymph of the silkworm, Bombyx mori from the beginning of spinning to the pharate adult stage if the larvae were reared on mulberry leaves throughout the 5th-instar (the last larval instar). In contrast, no urease activity was detected in the hemolymph of insects fed artificial diets, resulting in accumulation of urea during the spinning stage. To identify...

Fluctuating temperatures and ectotherm growth: distinguishing non-linear and time-dependent effects.

Most terrestrial ectotherms experience diurnal and seasonal variation in temperature. Because thermal performance curves are non-linear, mean performance can differ in fluctuating and constant thermal environments. However, time-dependent effects--effects of the order and duration of exposure to temperature--can also influence mean performance. We quantified the non-linear and time-dependent ef...

Influence of diet on the larval beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua, glucose oxidase activity

Many researchers investigating plant-insect interactions maintain their insect colonies on artificial diet and assume that salivary enzymes and elicitors remain representative of natural situations. These salivary elicitors, such as the enzyme glucose oxidase (GOX), play important roles in influencing plant defense responses. In fact, GOX has been implicated in suppressing induced nicotine-prod...

Phenotypic plasticity in response to dietary salt stress: Na+ and K+ transport by the gut of Drosophila melanogaster larvae.

Drosophila provides a useful model system for studies of the mechanisms involved in regulation of internal ion levels in response to variations in dietary salt load. This study assessed whether alterations in Na(+) and K(+) transport by the gut of larval D. melanogaster reared on salt-rich diets contribute to haemolymph ionoregulation. Na(+) and K(+) fluxes across the isolated guts of third ins...
